Can’t and Won’t Agree with the Critics

07 Dec

Can't and Won'tLydia Davis’s recent collection of short stories, Can’t and Won’t, has received high praise from critics.

Many of the stories in the book are quite short (sometimes only a few lines), and Davis really experiments with the genre (sometimes working in forms that are essentially poetic).  While I appreciate what Davis is doing here, most of these stories just didn’t move me or stick with me after I turned the page.  (I almost stopped reading after the twenty-page story about cows standing in a field, but I pushed on to the end.)

This book isn’t without some good pieces, but I can’t foresee recommend this collection to others.
